How to Write a Check: 6 Easy Steps (With Examples)

How to write a check in 6 easy steps, with examples for dollars and cents

Even if you rarely use paper checks, you'll probably need to write one at some point — for rent, a security deposit, a government fee or a gift. Writing a check takes about a minute once you know what goes where. Here are the six steps, with a filled-in example and the right way to write amounts with cents.

Quick answer: to write a check, fill in the date, the payee's name, the amount in numbers next to the $ sign, the amount in words on the line below (with cents as a fraction, like 75/100), an optional memo, and your signature at the bottom right.

How to write a check, step by step

How to write a check: a filled-in check with numbered steps for the date, payee, amount in numbers, amount in words, memo and signature
A filled-in check with each step numbered. Sample data only.
  1. Write the date. In the top right corner, write today's date — for example, 10/23/2026 or October 23, 2026.
  2. Write the payee. On the "Pay to the order of" line, write the full name of the person or company you're paying, exactly as they want it — for example, "Oakwood Apartments."
  3. Write the amount in numbers. In the box next to the $ sign, write the amount, starting right at the left edge so nothing can be added: 1,250.75.
  4. Write the amount in words. On the line below the payee, write the dollar amount in words and the cents as a fraction over 100: "One thousand two hundred fifty and 75/100." Draw a line through any empty space up to the word "Dollars."
  5. Add a memo (optional). At the bottom left, note what the check is for — "Rent – November" or an account or invoice number.
  6. Sign the check. Sign on the line at the bottom right, the same way you signed when you opened the account. A check without a signature isn't valid.

Use blue or black ink, write clearly, and don't leave blank spaces that someone could fill in.

How to write a check with cents

Cents always go as a fraction over 100 after the dollar amount in words. If there are no cents, write "00/100" so nothing can be added.

Amount In numbers In words
$50.25 50.25 Fifty and 25/100
$100 100.00 One hundred and 00/100
$1,000 1,000.00 One thousand and 00/100
$1,250.75 1,250.75 One thousand two hundred fifty and 75/100
$1,500 1,500.00 One thousand five hundred and 00/100
$2,000 2,000.00 Two thousand and 00/100
$10,000 10,000.00 Ten thousand and 00/100
$0.75 0.75 Zero and 75/100

Tip: you don't need commas or the word "and" between hundreds and tens in the words line — "one thousand two hundred fifty" is clear. Use "and" only before the cents.

How to write a check to yourself or for cash

  • To yourself: write your own name on the payee line, then fill in the rest as usual. You can deposit it into another account you own.
  • For cash: write "Cash" on the payee line. Be careful — anyone holding a "Cash" check can cash it, so only do this at the bank counter.

Common check-writing mistakes

  • Numbers and words don't match. If they differ, the bank may use the written amount or reject the check. Double-check both.
  • Leaving empty space. Always start at the far left and draw a line through the rest.
  • Forgetting to sign. An unsigned check won't be accepted.
  • Using pencil or erasable ink. Use a permanent blue or black pen.
  • Post-dating and expecting it to wait. Writing a future date doesn't always stop a bank from processing the check early.
  • Not tracking it. Record every check in your check register or app so you know your real balance.

Made a mistake? Void the check

Don't try to correct a check with crossing-out — write "VOID" across it and start over with a new one. Our guide shows how to void a check the right way. A voided check is also what employers ask for to set up direct deposit; if you don't have checks for that, you can generate a voided check online with VoidFast.

Where is the routing number on a check?

The numbers along the bottom of every check are your routing number, account number and check number. If a form asks for them, see where the routing number is on a check.
